The Hobbit Post 3

I have been reading The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien for a while now as I am nearing the end of what is an amazing adventure. I am currently on chapter XII, "Inside Information", which is one of the last in the book. So far Bilbo and the thirteen dwarves have crossed any dangers that have been set in their path. Now they are standing on the doorstep of the mountain that holds the dragon guarding the valuable riches they have conquered the distant lands for, and Bilbo isn't ready to give up just yet. He has considered turning back thousands of times, yet pressing on in each case, and he's not going to leave when his motivation is right in front of him. Yet I am just dying to know if the dwarves and Bilbo will be able to conquer the mighty dragon that has destroyed one of the largest cities in the land in one day. So far this book is amazing. It is easily one of my favorite books of all time. This could be because it is about a hobbit that showed no courage at all, then when traveling around the nation, he became one of the most valuable people in the group of fourteen. It is amazing how great of J. R. R. Tolkien has made. I think it never would have been published if he didn't show the need to share his imagination with others. That was most likely his motivation while writing this book. It is also an interesting theme Tolkien has fit into this adventure novel. I haven't read many books where a cowardly man was forced to go on an adventure and ended up gaining a lot from it. That's why the theme is that no matter who you are, your are capable of great accomplishments. Just like Bilbo, who is still my favorite character in the book. This is because he has changed so much. It is obvious to see that he has overcome many of his fears and enemies, making him an even better man (or hobbit) than he was at the beginning of the story. One interesting quote from the story is," Already he was a very different hobbit from the one that had run out without a pocket-handkerchief from Bag-End long ago." This was from the narrator (Bilbo) and it shows that Bilbo really had changed from the beginning. I just want to know if Bilbo and all thirteen dwarves will ever see Gandalf again?

  1. I really enjoyed reading your posts, Hunter. You have a nice way of describing what you read.

Tolkien is awesome. I got to go to the pub where he would hang out with other scholars like C.S. Lewis. He was a professor of Old English literature. A lot of his stories were inspired by those tales. See any similarities to Sir Gawain or Beowulf?

You should look up a guy named Joseph Campbell. He writes about the Hero's Journey. A character goes on a quest, learns things, and ends up a different person. Ring a bell? ;-)
