I am at page 237/366 in Friday Night Lights by H. G. Bissinger. In this part of the book Billingsly was beat out of his position by Comer because he kept fumbling and and he was not playing well at all. Then the coach put Comer in and Comer ran for over one hundred yards and scored two touchdowns. Billingsly is very upset and he claims that Comer only received the spot because he is black.
The next chapter in the book, Black and White, shows how racism was still a big problem in Odessa. It explains that the blacks and whites lived in different parts of town and therefore played for different high school football teams. I think the author is trying to show that racism still existed and how segregated some communities were. "It took two painful years to find someone willing to sell the first black family a home" It shows how badly blacks were treated. I wonder who will win the state championship and who else will lose their starting position.
