I am reading "Friday Night Lights" by H.G. Bissinger. The theme is to never give up. I have read to page 94 out of 366. This story takes place in a Texas city called Odessa in 1988, Odessa is a small town with a big football team. The Permian High School football team, the Panthers, are trying to win the state championship. In one of their first games their star running back is seriously injured and is out for the rest of the season. Now there are players competing for the starting spot.
The best character is Don Billingsly. He is competing to be a running back. He is a senior and his dad was a star running back so everyone has high expectations. He has more faith in himself after good games. He gets in fights often and has drinking problems. "Don had become the spitting image of his dad." "The same power-packed frames coiled and ready to strike if the wrong button got grazed" It shows he is just like his dad and they both have short tempers and are strong.
Also competing for the running back position is Comer, he is stronger and faster than Billingsly. Billingsly doesn't like him because he is black and he is threatening his position. Who will get the starting spot?
It is a good book because it is exciting and it tells a true
story. I think the author wrote this to tell how important football is
to some people.
